Unusual Klaviyo flows that can make you sales

Written by Gavin Hewitson, founder of the email marketing agency In-box.co.nz

Odds are, if you are reading this article, you are already familiar with Klaviyo. You have your basic flows set up, and you probably have some campaigns going out on a regular basis.

But, Klaviyo is capable of just soooo much more. While many businesses leverage standard flows such as the “Welcome series“, the browse abandon flow, abandon checkout flow, birthday flow, abandon site flow, expected next order, thank you flowcross-sell flow, the “Abandoned Cart“, and the “Post-Purchase“, there are several more unusual flows that can help increase sales and enhance the customer experience.  Let’s dive in ‘Unusual Klaviyo flows that can make you sales’.

Here are a few of these flows that you can use in your email marketing strategies:

  • Milestone Celebration Flow:

This flow can be triggered when a customer hits a certain milestone with your brand, be it their 5th purchase, 1-year anniversary of their first buy, or spending a certain amount in total (whatever you want really). You can also use these automations to complement a VIP program of sorts (if you have one), shoot me a message here if you want to learn how to do this.

→Usage:  Typically, once the milestone you set is reached, I recommend sending the reader a celebratory email recognising the event along with some sort of reward. This could be a special discount, an exclusive sneak peek at upcoming products, or even a small freebie on their next purchase.

→Benefit: Strengthens brand loyalty and rewards returning customers and also alludes to future potential rewards which therefor encourages even further purchases

  • Weather-Related Recommendations:

This flow requires a bit of technical know-how, but if you have the skills or access to the skills to set it up, it can really pay off, especially if your product relates to certain weather patterns. The idea here is to send your readers product recommendations that align with the current weather, For example If you sell clothing, and it’s about to be a rainy week in, send out an email highlighting your best raincoats or umbrellas.

→Usage: See the above

→Benefit: Makes your emails timely and highly relevant to the recipient’s current needs.

Seeing as though this is a bit technical, this is how you set up this flow:

  • Step 1 – Integrate or subscribe to a weather API, such as OpenWeatherMap, Weather Underground, or AccuWeather, to fetch real-time weather data.
  • Step 2 – Ensure you have subscribers’ locations (or at least zip codes/postal codes) in your email database to fetch the relevant weather data for them.
  • Step 3 – Segment your email list based on location. This allows you to send specific weather-related emails to subscribers in different regions.
  • Step 4 – Create the emails, here are some examples:

steps to follow to create klaviyo flow

Sunny Day: Promote sun hats, sunglasses, beachwear, sun cream, or picnics, etc.

Rainy Day: Highlight raincoats, umbrellas, waterproof shoes, indoor activities, or soup recipes, etc.

Cold/Snow: Push winter wear, hot chocolate, heaters, or snow gear, etc.

Hot Day: Suggest cooling products, ice creams, summer dresses, or fans, etc.

Automation Setup:

  • Step 1 – Create a new flow.
  • Step 2 – Set the trigger for this flow as a daily check, possibly early in the morning.
  • Step 3 – Use the weather API to fetch the weather forecast for each segmented location.
  • Step 4 – Depending on the forecast, queue the relevant email content to be sent to the subscribers in that region.

Interactive Quiz Results:

Have your customers take a fun and engaging quiz on your site, focusing on their preferences or needs. This could be about their style, skin type, or any other relevant topic pertaining to your industry. Once they’ve finished, the flow sends them a personalized email based on their results. Email marketing really shines through when you leverage personalization, and leveraging the personal information that a quiz provides you is a great point to get stuck into.

→Usage: Here is an example, If you own  a skincare brand, a customer might fill out a quiz about their skin concerns and then receive an email with product recommendations specifically for their skin type. All you have to do is tag users according to that quiz, segment them according to their tags. And boom you are ready to go.

→Benefit: Provides a tailored experience, making customers feel understood and more inclined to purchase. As with everything email, and digital marketing really, personalization is key.

  • Educational Series:

→Description: Instead of just selling products, set up  a series of educational emails that guide your customers on how to use their product or offer relevant knowledge. These are essentially post purchase follow-up flows, with more than just saying ‘Thank you for your purchase’

→Usage: If you sell specialty teas, you might have a flow that delves into the history of tea, brewing methods, and health benefits over a series of emails. Within those emails, you can also recommend additional products while educating your reader about the original product that was purchased

→Benefit: Positions your brand as an expert in the field, building trust and fostering a deeper connection with the customer.

→Conclusion
